Festivals

Kerala is a land of festivals.Apart from the major festivities,there are a lot of local festivals too that are celebrated with the same heart and enthusiasm.As a result,the calendar is packed with festivities throughout the year.




The various festivals represent the diversity of the cultural landscape of the place.
The major festivals are:

Onam:





                                         
Onam is the most popular and important festival of the people.It is a celebration of nostalgia for most people.
Legend has it that there was a demon king who ruled the state of Kerala but was coerced to abdicate the throne and go to the nether world by the jealous Gods.The belief is that he visits his erstwhile kingdom during the Onam days.

Vishu:
It is another important festival and its main event is "Kani-Kanal"
Coconuts,fruits,cereals and Konna flowers are kept in pots to prepare kana.






Navaratri:

Navaratri in Kerala is celebrated for 3 days-Durgashtami,Mahanavami and Vijayadashami.
Vijayadashami is considered as an auspicious occasion  to stsrt new ventures.People initiate their children to the world of letters on this day.
                                            
Maha Sivarathri and Asthami Rohini are also very sacred and widely celebrated festivals in Kerala.

Boat Races:

Kerala is famous for its boat races and attracts not only locals but also people from far and wide.
It is an excellent sport that signifies the splendid team work,integration and amity of the people of Kerala.An occasion of unparalleled excitement that is a reflection of the vibrant people.
Boat races are magnificent fiestas that bring alive the tranquil backwaters.
